Mexican pastry shop Y Más opened in Price Center last Wednesday, replacing an empty space that used to contain the UC San Diego Mailing Center.

The provider of the baked goods is Su Pan Bakery, which has locations in San Diego and San Marcos. Su Pan Bakery offers a variety of freshly made Mexican pastries, focusing on “providing you with the original pastry and cake flavor from Mexico.” Tucked into the corner of Price Center East next to Burger King, Y Más provides a much needed pop of color in an otherwise industrial-themed area.

The shop offers a variety of Mexican pastries and desserts, such as tres leches, niño envuelto, and conchas. In a nod towards their name, Y Más also has French and Italian desserts in particular: tiramisu, bread pudding, and freshly made croissants. Alongside its pastries, the pastry shop provides hot coffee, drinks, and surprisingly, an unaffiliated popsicle stand called Viva Pops.

Viva Pops offers “all-natural, gourmet frozen pops and goodies” at reasonable prices and a variety of different flavors. Adjacent to the Y Más bakery case, the popsicle stand is a welcome departure from the typical fare presented at Price Center.

The new pastry shop is bustling and full of life, as more popular pastries sometimes sell out by 11:00 a.m. A majority of the colorful tables and seats are typically full of students and faculty evidently enjoying the new bakery in Price Center.

“It exceeded all of my expectations,” said Gianni Chiribao, a first year Muir student who ordered a cannoli and a slice of bread pudding. “It tasted just like my mom’s cooking.”

Y Más has since replaced the old Mailing Center that was previously located in Price Center East. The new Mailing Center has been integrated with the main Postal Center location in the Campus Services Complex, located north of Warren Field.

The new UCSD Mailing Center is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Y Más is open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m, Monday through Saturday.
