Jaz Twersky Appointed as 2017-18 Editor-in-Chief

Jaz Twersky was appointed to the position of Editor-in-Chief for the 2017-18 school year by The Triton Senior Editorial Board late last quarter.

Twersky joined staff last spring, writing for the Opinion section before assuming her role as The Triton’s first Opinion Editor, where she recruited a staff and helped writers generate a consistent stream of content. The decision was made following a meeting in which the board of seven voting-eligible members read over candidate applications, asked questions, and chose between two applicants.

Before writing for The Triton, Twersky wrote and edited copy for The MQ, a campus satirical paper. She plans to remain a member of The MQ next year, taking fewer responsibilities to allow her to focus more fully on her work at The Triton.

“I think it’s very important to be able to hold the university accountable and have a clear-eyed look at what the administration is doing on this campus and how that impacts students,” she said. “It’s important to uplift the voice of students in the Opinion section, to represent their concerns in News, and to tell people about the cultural life of the university in Arts and Entertainment.”

Some of the initiatives Twersky plans to make in her new role include establishing a source of funding for the paper to support its needs and to potentially pay staff. She is also working to facilitate a community advisory board, obtain office space, and cement relationships with various on-campus organizations.

Twersky will be stepping into the position in place of The Triton’s founder and current Editor-in-Chief, Gabe Schneider.

“I think [Twersky] brings an uncompromisingly critical lens to everything she approaches, and I think she’s very fair,” Schneider said. “I think, in addition to that, she happens to have very good managerial skills – so all of those things tied together will bring the paper together and hopefully allow us to expand our efforts.”

Schneider will stay with the paper, shifting into the role of News Editor. He plans to grow the department, institute a system of beat reporting, and looks forward to taking a step back to watch the paper move forward without him leading it.

Current News Editor Shine Cho will also transition into the position of Managing Editor next year. After working with her this school year, Twersky believes Cho has a solid amount of news experience that will put her in a position to uplift other staff members and provide a strong support system.

“Shine has a lot of experience with news and has already done important management work over in the news section. I look forward to working with her next year,” Twersky said. “Frankly, I’m tremendously excited about all of our editors for next year, and about the work our editors and staff are doing.”

The Senior Editorial Board is for next year as follows:

  • Editor-in-Chief: Jaz Twersky
  • Managing Editor: Shine Cho
  • Administrative Director: Sima Navid
  • News Editor: Gabe Schneider
  • Arts and Entertainment Editor: Ana Magallanes
  • Opinion Editor: Vaishnavi Paudel
  • Photo Editor: Connor Gorry
  • Copy Editor: Isabelle Yan

The Triton is accepting applications for next year’s staff.

Natasha Vyhovsky is the Assistant News Editor for The Triton
