UC Extends Fall Application Deadline for Students Affected by Wildfires

The University of California (UC) announced on Monday that it will extend the fall 2018 application deadline to Dec. 15 for students who have been affected by the recent California wildfires.

According to the announcement, applicants can request an extension and fee waiver if they cannot finish the application process before the original deadline of Nov. 30. They should provide details of relevant circumstances, such as an “inability to complete specific courses, a mid-year school change, or other conditions that may affect your academic profile.” The announcement also contains financial aid information for students whose families’ financial circumstances were affected by California wildfire.

“Several students, employees and their loved ones have been evacuated for their safety and many of our neighbors and friends have lost their homes,” UC President Janet Napolitano said in a statement mid-last month. “The university stands ready to help all community members needing assistance, including through its medical facilities and campus resources such as employee assistance programs and counseling services.”

According to The Guardian, by October 14, the Northern California fires had burned more than 210,000 acres, destroyed 5,700 homes, and forced 90,000 people to evacuate. The wildfires have killed at least 43 people and hospitalized at least 185, making this the deadliest month of wildfires in California history.

More information on how to request an extension can be found on the UC’s official website.
