Outdated Campus Police Log in Violation of Federal Law

Updates to the UC San Diego Crime Log are weeks behind schedule, a violation of the federal Higher Education Act of 1965 (HEA).
The HEA requires that the crime log provide records by date of all crimes reported to the campus police. The log must also be updated in two business days of the crime report and be made available to the public during business hours.

The last entry to the digital version of the log is from Feb. 5, but logs from Feb. 23, 24, and 25 have since been added on Monday. Representatives from the UCSD Police Department told The Triton that this is due to understaffing and that they do not have an alternative physical copy of the log available to the public.

The Department of Education can fine UCSD up to $35,000 if the university is found to be in non-compliance with any safety and security-related provisions in the act.
