UCSD Student Arrested for Carrying Loaded Firearm on Campus

The UC Police Department (UCPD) arrested UC San Diego student Xue Ju Huang for weapons violation and vandalism in parking lot 206 (parking lot near the Faculty Club) on Wednesday, May 2, at 11:19 a.m.

According to the latest UCPD arrest report, UCPD arrested Huang for carrying a loaded firearm in public, vandalism, and possessing a loaded firearm on campus.

UCPD releases annual reports on the number of offenses for crimes on each of the UC campuses, and it reported that between 2012 and 2016, there were 20 weapons offenses arrests at UCSD, five of which were firearms-related.

“I can only imagine what would have happened if this person wasn’t arrested,” said Emma Potter, co-president and co-founder of Students Demand Action UCSD, a national student-led group against gun violence. “Especially with the recent tragedy at Santa Fe High School, these events will continue to happen if we don’t take the necessary steps to ensure safety.”

Despite a request for further information, UCPD declined to comment on the arrest, but it currently provides an emergency notifications system to communicate potentially dangerous situations to students, faculty, and staff, who can enroll in the system on Tritonlink.

  • Maybe a notification should have went out on May 2nd? Even though I no longer work for the University I still have Tritonlink, no warning sent???

  • This is ridiculous. Many of the Chinese nationals at UCSD own/carry guns. They're scared to death of Americans with guns and are indoctrinated against the danger of the gun-toting cowboy, so the first thing they do when they get to the US is pick up a firearm. UC police is going to have to arrest half the student body if they really don't want guns on campus.
