Anti-Semitic Inscription Found on Hillel Center Sign

An anti-Semitic inscription was recently left on a sign celebrating the upcoming Hillel Jewish student center at the corner of La Jolla Village Drive and Torrey Pines Lane, according to ABC10 News.

The inscription reads “Fuck all you!” and the text resembles Nazi swastikas.

The Glickman Hillel Student Center, a $15 million project, was approved unanimously by the San Diego Planning Commission in April 2017 and then by the San Diego City Council in October 2017 after nearly a decade of community opposition and legal hurdles.

La Jolla’s history of anti-Semitism includes a ban on Jewish homebuyers which lasted until 1964. The ban was lifted partially due to pressure from UC San Diego threatening to relocate unless the discriminatory practices ceased.

The anti-Semitic inscription follows a recent spike in instances of anti-Semitism. The Anti-Defamation League, an international Jewish organization, reported a 40 percent and 89 percent annual increase of anti-Semitic incidents in San Diego and colleges nationwide, respectively.

“There are opponents out there. There are those who don’t like us. There are those who don’t want us, but we are heartened by the hundreds of community members, of administrators, of friends across this county, who support Hillel and the work that we do with students,” said Hillel executive director Rabbi David Singer in a statement to ABC10 News.
