Canyon Vista to Close for Renovations in 2019

Canyon Vista, the Warren College dining hall, will close for renovations at the end of Winter Quarter 2019, reopening Fall 2019.

According to Housing Dining Hospitality (HDH) Executive Director, Hemlata Jhaveri, the purpose of the remodel is to “better serve students and the campus community.”

The new Canyon Vista will include a combined market and dining hall on the first floor, while the second floor will have study spaces and lounges. HDH is also planning to add a coffee house and air conditioning. After its renovation, Canyon Vista will be better suited to accommodate more customers, from undergraduate students to graduate students and researchers.

This remodel comes after several controversial incidents in the past. Earlier this year, students were served undercooked chicken at Canyon Vista. Furthermore, surveys have consistently given the dining hall mediocre reviews compared to other dining halls.

In spring quarter last year, HDH held sessions with Warren residents to discuss new designs and menu ideas. During the HDH forum, Jhaveri highlighted some of the new concepts that would be offered when Canyon Vista reopens.

One new dining option, called “Three-Sixty,” would offer made-to-order stir-fry meals and traditional entrée stations, as found in other dining halls. Three-Sixty will also feature a Mongolian-style grill and be surrounded by refrigerated, frozen, and dry groceries available for purchase.

Other stations will include “Fusion,” serving made-to-order breakfast and international foods, as well as a coffee vendor that would open early and stay open until late night, and a customizable salad bar that would offer freshly-cut produce and meal kits.

During the remodeling process, HDH will operate two food trucks seven days a week that will be open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner to serve students affected by the dining hall closure. The trucks will be parked at the basketball courts in Warren College.

Jhaveri expressed optimism for the future of Canyon Vista: “We are excited to rejuvenate the 26-year-old restaurant with fresh design concepts that will open up the space and make it more inviting.”
