Dishing on the HDH Forum: A Recap of Upcoming Changes

At its Fall Quarter Public Forum, Housing Dining Hospitality (HDH) announced that a series of changes will gradually take effect by 2023. Very few students attended the forum, which was held November 15.

Following The Triton’s extensive coverage of the forum, here are some of the changes to take note of:

Canyon Vista Remodel

Canyon Vista Dining Hall (CV) in Warren College will close in Winter Quarter 2019 for renovations. CV is expected to reopen in Fall 2019 with many menu changes, including a late night coffee bar, made-to-order breakfast, and a Mongolian-style grill.

HDH will operate two food trucks seven days a week for breakfast, lunch, and dinner in Warren College until the renovations are complete.

Changes to Dining Dollars

HDH announced several changes to the way Dining Dollars are operated. First, effective this quarter, Dining Dollars will carry over to the end of Fall Quarter of the following school year instead of the end of Summer Session, giving students more time to spend excess Dining Dollars.

Second, HDH is gradually phasing out and replacing some Dining Dollar plans, starting with removing the Community Dining Plan in Fall 2019. The five current dining plans will be replaced with three dining plan options that offer Triton Cash. Two plans will be available to all students, and the third will only be available to continuing students.

New Outdoor Spaces

HDH approved a $2-million project to beautify 21 areas around residence halls throughout campus, calling them “Decompress Spaces.” These areas are expected to have fire pits, shaded areas, and coffee kiosks.

The first round of renovations is expected to be completed by the end of the 2018–19 school year, while the rest of the 21 areas will be complete by the end of the 2020–21 school year.

Seventh and Eighth Colleges

Sixth College will move into the North Torrey Pines Learning Living Neighborhood when its official location—announced last year—opens in Fall 2020. At the forum, HDH unveiled two new plans for a Seventh College and an Eighth College.

In 2020, The Village (transfer student housing) will turn into Seventh College. Transfer students will be moved to The Rita or Pepper Canyon East, or where current Sixth College apartments are located. Pepper Canyon West will become an additional option for transfer/upper division students in 2022. In 2023, HDH plans to open Eighth College in the Revelle College parking lot. It is unclear when construction will begin.
