Fatal Motorcyclist Accident Affects UCSD Bus Routes

A fatal accident between a motorcyclist and an SUV resulted in heavy traffic and road closures close to the UC San Diego campus this morning, according to CBS8 News.

San Diego Police Sergeant Michael Stirk confirmed that the accident occurred on the 8700 block of Gilman Drive.

The motorcyclist, who is currently unidentified, was pronounced dead after being rushed to Scripps Memorial Hospital.

A SigAlert was sent at 9:00 a.m. notifying citizens that the northbound lanes of Gilman Drive between Villa La Jolla Dr. and La Jolla Village Drive were closed. The MTS bus system around campus also experienced delays. Students reported that between 8:30 and 9:30 a.m., 202 SuperLoop buses took an alternate route by Rock Bottom Restaurant & Brewery to avoid La Jolla Village Square. The buses then stopped across the street from the usual 202 Gilman Transit Center bus stop.

The owner of the Toyota Highlander cooperated with authorities and remained at the scene of the accident.

As of 1:00 p.m., SDPD Traffic Division has confirmed that roads have been reopened. The current status of the investigation is unknown.
