Fire Alarm in Communications Building Leads to Evacuation

The fire alarm in the Communications Building (MCC) went off at approximately 10:30 a.m. Professors and students evacuated the building.

Police cars and fire trucks arrived soon after, and classes were cancelled at approximately 11 a.m.

The Triton staff members in the area noticed what appeared to be smoke coming from the side of MCC. At this point, the cause of the fire alarm is unknown.

The Triton reached out to University Communications and Public Affairs for more information. In a statement to The Triton, Communications Officer Erika Johnson confirmed that there was no fire at the site.

“We checked in with the police department … it was just a steam release from a boiler,” Johnson said. “An alarm went off, which led to an evacuation but there were no injuries.”

According to Johnson, the building should be operating “as normal again.”
