One Killed, One Injured in University City Shooting

At approximately 8:41 p.m. Saturday night, officers responded to the intersection of Nobel Drive and Lombard Place where they found two men who had been shot, according to the San Diego Police Department (SDPD).

Based on the preliminary investigation, the two men were driving into an apartment parking structure when the suspect approached on foot and fired multiple shots into the victims’ vehicle.

A man in his 30s died from his injuries at the hospital. A 39-year-old man remained in the hospital in stable condition.

The shooting appeared to be a targeted attack based on information gathered by SDPD.

Nobel Drive was shut down between Genesee Ave and Towne Centre Drive for several hours as SDPD investigated the scene. Blood-soaked clothing could be seen scattered in the lanes of Nobel Drive just east of Lombard Place.

The closure left about a dozen people who lived in nearby complexes stranded on the corner of Nobel Drive and Towne Centre Drive.

UC San Diego student Chase Ramos waited at the intersection for about an hour and a half. Ramos told The Triton that his girlfriend was walking home at the time when she heard the gunshots and saw the suspect run across the street. While at the intersection, another resident showed Ramos a picture of “three [to] four bullet holes through a window” of a vehicle outside the Palisade at Westfield UTC apartment building at 8800 Lombard Place.

An SDPD officer escorted Ramos and the other residents back to their homes at approximately 11:30 p.m.

The suspect remains outstanding and was described as an unknown person wearing a light-colored jacket and dark pants.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call SDPD’s Homicide Unit at (619) 531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
