Live Updates: Unidentified Death in Geisel Library

Wednesday, November 6, 

1:50 P.M. Update

On Nov. 6 at approximately 11:35 A.M., an unidentified person fell to their death from the eighth-floor stairwell of Geisel Library. Later at 12:50 P.M., several UCPD officers along with library employees closed the library early and ushered patrons outside. Four UCPD cars were parked outside the silent tree and two UCPD cars left at 12:55 P.M. once the library was evacuated. 

According to the library’s Communications and Engagement Office, the library at this time does not believe the person was a UCSD student. Librarians are providing students with Geisel’s Library Safety and Security office phone number for student’s to retrieve their belongings from the library.

At 1:06 P.M. UC San Diego posted a statement on X, formerly Twitter, stating, “Due to an incident this morning, effective immediately, Geisel Library will be closed for the rest of the day. WongAvery Library will remain open until 8 p.m. Additional information about tomorrow’s building hours will be made available as soon as we have information to share.”

At 1:44 P.M. a UC San Diego Timely Warning was released stating the incident posed “no threat to our campus community,” and that more updates would be forthcoming

UCSD’s Counseling and Psychological Services(CAPS) office is taking walk-in appointments today in light of the incident. 

2:55 P.M. Update

At 2:45 P.M., the Communications and Engagement Office told The Triton, “This morning at approximately 11:35 a.m. we received a report of an incident at Geisel Library that resulted in the death of a person who is not enrolled as a student. As we mourn this loss, our focus is on supporting one another. The Library will be closed for the remainder of the day, and counseling and other services are available.”

3:15 P.M. Update

At 3:14 P.M., the Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor Elizabeth H. Simmons sent an email to all academics, staff, and students at UC San Diego stating “Out of an abundance of caution, Geisel Library is closed for the remainder of the day. Those with plans to attend classes should check their Canvas for additional details on class relocations.”

Thursday, November 7 

12:10 P.M. Update

On Nov. 6, at 8:00 P.M., the UCSD Library made a post on X, formerly Twitter, saying, “Following today’s closure, Geisel Library will reopen tomorrow, 11/7, at 7:30 a.m., and WongAvery Library at 10 a.m. Our thoughts are with everyone affected.”

 The post also provided links to mental health services for students and faculty.
