Ella Chen was elected as the Editor-in-Chief of The Triton for the 2019-20 school year by The Triton’s Editorial Board in late Winter Quarter. She took office Week 5 of Spring Quarter.

Chen is a second year Biochemistry and Cell Biology major in Eleanor Roosevelt College and joined The Triton in Fall 2017 as a contributing writer to the News Section. Chen progressed through the ranks, first by becoming an Assistant News Editor in Winter Quarter 2018 and then by heading the News Section as Editor in Spring Quarter 2018.

“I was just so enthusiastic about writing because I was itching to learn more about what was going on around campus,” Chen commented. “I wanted to be a part of a community of journalists that shared similar goals.”

Currently, Chen is transitioning the breaking news beat to current News Editor Orianna Borrelli and working on solidifying the section as a whole. She hopes to move towards building each section through recruitment while advancing the long-term growth of The Triton. Her goals include creating a UC-wide network of news sources in order to best streamline content.

“Outreach is going to be a large part of my editorship because I believe that building the structure of the paper comes from having enough journalists to write, investigate and discover,” Chen said.

Chen succeeds former Editor-in-Chief Mo Al Elew. Prior to becoming Editor-in-Chief, Al Elew was an Assistant News Editor in the News Section and has worked toward The Triton’s long-term expansion goals. Under Al Elew’s leadership, The Triton acquired 501(c)(3) status to begin fundraising.

“Ella Chen will bring an unmatched understanding of our content and organization that I believe will lead to a transformational year of progress at The Triton,” said Al Elew.

“I’m forever grateful for the skills I have learned from my news editor and my editor in chief and I can only hope to pass this torch onto my next successor,” Chen said. “Here’s to breaking news better!”
