Maya Philipp was re-elected as the Editor-in-Chief (EIC) of The Triton for the 2023-24 school year by The Triton’s Editorial Board on March 2.

Philipp, a fourth-year Marine Biology major and Urban Studies and Planning minor at Seventh College, joined The Triton in 2020 as a photographer. After 2020, Philipp moved up to Assistant Multimedia Editor in March 2021 and soon after became Multimedia Editor during the 2021-22 school year. Finally in Spring Quarter 2022, Philipp transitioned into the EIC position.

“I enjoyed my time with the paper, but I wanted to be more involved with the direction of the paper and how it ran,” Philipp said. “I knew things my section [Multimedia] and others hoped to achieve, and my goal was to create a platform where they could do that!”

Philipp ran for the EIC role for a second year to continue working to help members of The Triton reach their goals.

“I’m so proud of what we’ve accomplished in the past year, but I want us to continue progressing and improving,” Philipp said.

As EIC during the 2022-23 school year, Philipp formed a relationship with UCSD Associated Students Concerts & Events (ASCE) and other organizations outside of UC San Diego to allow The Triton to gain access to events and cover topics that interest and matter to UCSD students. She has also improved the paper’s organization by working with the paper’s editors to streamline the publishing process and strengthening staffers’ ability to report on breaking news and upcoming events.

In the 50th Annual Excellence in Journalism Awards presented by the San Diego Press Club, The Triton received second place in the College Print or Online: Best College Newspaper category. Philipp, along with Arts & Culture writer Chloe Sun, received second place in the College Print or Online: Photography — Arts category for her photo in the story “23rd edition of SDAFF showcases Asian American and International Cinema.”

For the 2023-24 school year, Philipp hopes for The Triton to continue expanding and refining its sections. With the reintroduction of The Conch, the paper’s satire section, this year, Philipp hopes to see The Conch and the other sections grow and have strong teams covering topics that interest and excite them.

“I want to build more connections within our team and between sections! We’ve done a great job creating a little community here, but I want to make that community more robust and have social events for people to connect outside of writing a story,” Philipp said.

Sarah Naughten, a fourth-year Molecular and Cell Biology major at Eleanor Roosevelt College (ERC) who has worked closely with Philipp as The Triton’s Managing Editor last school year, said that Philipp did a “wonderful job” as EIC and is “very happy” that Philipp is continuing her role.

“During the 2022-23 academic year, Maya led The Triton through the graduate student strike [and] helped members of The Trition’s News staff shed light on racism in the classroom and injustices within sororities on UCSD’s campus,” Naughten said.

Naughten noted that Philipp has not only helped the publication’s staffers with coverage but also with finding community.

“Maya also did a fantastic job of fostering a supportive and welcoming community both within The Triton as a whole and within The Triton’s editorial team,” Naughten said.

In her final year at the newspaper, Philipp is excited to see where the team wants to take The Triton in the future.

“While I will be EIC for another year, the direction of the paper is going to be up to the writers and staff who are continuing, and I’m excited to hear their visions and set up the framework for them to make it happen,” Philipp said.

Following her re-election, Philipp is working with Managing Editor Liam Winstead to manage The Triton this school year.
