A bomb threat forced the evacuation of Atkinson Hall and the surrounding area on UC San Diego’s campus on Thursday, April 25. After several hours, the building was deemed safe and closures were lifted.
Students were alerted of the bomb threat at 8:22 p.m. that night via a “Triton Alert,” which advised to avoid the area. University Service Officials (USO) blocked Voigt Drive from Matthews Lane to Hopkins Lane as crews searched the building.
Resources from a variety of agencies, including the UCSD Police Department, San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and the San Diego Fire Bomb Squad, were seen thoroughly searching the building.
Around 11:20 p.m. the same night, the building was cleared and an “all clear” was provided by responding agencies, according to Matt Nagel, a spokesperson for UCSD. Nagel stated that no motive was shared.
