On November 6, 2024, the day following Election Day, Revelle College celebrated their Cup of Culture event at Revelle Courtyard. Among a charged political atmosphere and low spirits, the event trudged on and laid the groundwork for community and hope to grow.

Under the stars and decadent luminescence from overhead string lights, the signature event was hosted to highlight the unique and diverse cultures upheld across campus. The ResLife team of Revelle College stated that their aim was to celebrate the diversity of the university, and honor the community by hosting student organizations and showcasing cross-cultural food from across San Diego. Gathered in a conference room decorated with national flags from around the world, attendees savored a wide variety of foods including pork buns, empanadas, samosas, and pita, served with agua de Jamaica and horchata.

This year’s celebration featured dynamic performances from three student organizations: Okinawan Karate, Wushu, and Polynesian Dance. The Karate club demonstrated disciplines across skill levels, including katas (forms) and kobudo (weapons) from Okinawa, Japan, the birthplace of Karate. Performers channeled energy through loud kiais (short shouts) and fighting spirit.

After a short intermission for food, drinks, and socializing, the Wushu club took over the stage with theatrical entrances and suspenseful music. Students executed crisp backflips and julienned virtual opponents with their swords. The club displayed forms with flawless balance, strength, and flexibility.

Wushu was followed by group performances by the Polynesian Dance Club. The dancers displayed graceful movements and energy wandering between figurative volcanoes and rivers. Between swaying hips, delicate hand movement, and agile footwork, the performance left its audience energized and tranquil.

Behind the scenes, the ResLife team that planned this event consisted of 11 people who strived to meet deadlines and complete purchasing, most of all providing a space for residents who were going through tough times and wanted to relax. The Cup of Culture not only stands as an annual gathering but embodies Revelle College’s commitment to honoring our university’s diverse heritage. Through this tradition, they celebrate not only their past achievements but also their present community and aspirations for a more connected future.

While this event took place in Fall Quarter 2024, make sure to look out for more events from the Revelle College ResLife team!
