Maya Philipp was unanimously elected to be the 2022-23 Editor-in-Chief (EIC) by The Triton’s Editorial Board on March 11. Philipp officially transitioned into her new role on April 25.
Philipp is an incoming third year at Seventh College majoring in Marine Biology and minoring in Urban Studies and Planning. After joining The Triton in 2020, Philipp worked on the Multimedia team and served as the Multimedia Editor during the 2021-22 school year.
One of Philipp’s main goals for the upcoming school year is to keep The Triton up to date with interests and concerns that matter most to UC San Diego students. “I am so excited to bring The Triton out of the tail end of this pandemic,” Philipp told The Triton.
“As I grow into Editor-in-Chief, I hope to showcase our paper’s ability to adapt and grow with the changing world of journalism and remain dedicated to displaying the good and the bad of UC San Diego student life. I want to bring out the voices of our diverse student body as much as possible as we continue to expand,” Philipp said.
Philipp transitioned into her new role with guidance from previous EIC Caroline Rodriguez, a Public Health major with a double minor in Psychology and Business. Rodriguez first worked for The Triton as a member of the newly created engagement team in 2019. Rodriguez graduated in June and will serve as a board member for The Triton.
“Although the coronavirus pandemic has continued and will continue to demonstrate its unpredictable nature, I believe Maya has demonstrated the tools necessary to elevate and heighten the reach and function of The Triton,” Rodriguez said.
As The Triton continues with its transition, Rodriguez hopes to ensure that the editorial board is comfortable with reaching out to its strong network of alumni. Rodriguez believes the new generation of The Triton’s staff must empathize with its preceding classes and make both its staff and the newspaper stronger.
“I am most excited about being involved with the paper from a broader perspective, interacting with other sections, and helping it all come together,” Philipp said.
A few of Philipp’s colleagues in The Triton describe her as passionate, hardworking, and creative.
“I think her becoming EIC is a strong move [by] The Triton to continue building our presence on campus and the community for a reliable news source,” said Jeremiah Amaya, the incoming Multimedia Editor who has worked closely with Philipp.
As EIC, Philipp will work closely with incoming Managing Editor Sarah Naughten.
Caroline Rodriguez is the 2021-22 Editor-In-Chief for The Triton.
